'Eskişehir' literally means Old City in Turkish; indeed, the city was founded by the Phrygians in at least 1000 BC. In time, Eskişehir became a synthesis of history and modernity. The city has a Central European feel to it with its bridges, parks, statues and trams. And also there are many historical places from the ancient times and old buildings as an example of great architecture.

Eskişehir is located at the middle west of Anatolia so it is very close to Ankara and Istanbul. The city is home to about 500,000 people and two of Turkey's biggest universities therefore the city is widely nicknamed as students city and rest of the population is immigrants from Balkans.

Due to the majority of the student population, Eskişehir has an amazing nightlife. And also, there are many cultural activities and festivals in the city during the whole year. Every year, city hosts 1 million people from the whole world.

Linköping became an Observer in 2012, when members of Engineering Physics and Electrical Engineering Students decided to found a local commitment as part of their Guild.

In 2013, JLC Linköping what was then a JLC, organized its first international workshop, "Ragnarök". Ragnarök combined robots and vikings, and the participants used Lego Mindstorm to develop search and rescue robots. In the spring of 2014, "Follow the Line" was organized as their 2nd international event. The workshop was based on creating line-following robots, through the utilization of Arduino.

2015 was an important year for JLC Linköping. First of all, the commitment decided to branch out on its own, and no longer be a part of the Student’s Guild. Statutes were written and they gained legal status in October. Shortly after, during ECM ‘15 in East Sarajevo, the JLC Linköping was promoted to LC status!

Bojana, Lourdes, Gunda, Yigit, Nikola and Daniel are the brave individuals who have vowed to dedicate their time towards achieving these ambitious goals, all under the superivison of our Chairman, Dusan. #EESTECinspiresPeople Kevin van der Mark (EESTEC LC Delft) is in Oversight Committee this year. He has a lot of experience, and he will share it with us: "In the year 2013 I was asked to be on the Board of the Electrical Engineering Association of the TU Delft, the ETV. With four other guys, I was tasked at running the association with over 700 members as a full-time boardmember. Our only experience being committee work, we didn’t really know what a huge challenge lay ahead of us. Within the 142nd board I had the position of External Affairs and Vice President, which meant that I was responsible for all the company contacts and fundraising to keep our association running.

Unlike other LCs, this had nothing to do with EESTEC. Until our predecessors told us two of us of had to join the EESTEC LC Delft board as either cp or chairperson, we had no idea what EESTEC was. We had heard about it, but never bothered to ask what it was. After explaining that as cp and chairperson you get a week for free abroad, I decided to give it a go as chairperson.

Together with my fellow board member and cp, Ralph van Schelven, I went on my first EESTEC event ever, ECM Tallinn. Our preparations were reading up on the statues, RoP and the Dutch Law on associations as explained by the previous board. We still had no idea what to expect during the week besides drinking with foreigners. After some Int. Awareness sessions, trainings and workshops, we got the picture of what EESTEC was all about. We arrived home fully motivated to do more with this awesome association.
Together we designed a new promotional strategy to share the opportunities of EESTEC with our local members. We made our local workshop bigger, included more local students and gave local lectures explaining what EESTEC is about. Slowly but surely we saw more people motivated and joining events.

My personal EESTEC story continued in Congress Athens, where due to a lot of local activities I had to leave Ralph behind. This congress made the position of LC Delft even more clear to me, share knowlegde of FR and support in all rules and regulations. Even though I’m not an official EESTEC trainer, with less than 24 hours to prepare I was asked to give my first FR training session. This experience was completely new, training on an international level with no preparations whatsoever! Since then I’ve been giving more trainings on a local and international level, which really strengthened my skillset.

The next big thing in my EESTEC career was the position of GA Chairperson on Congress on Madrid. Wow, just wow! This was something I was really motivated to do, but I never thought it would be so challenging and educational. Facilitating five days of GM with over 150 participants from so many different cultures and languages was an awesome experience which I will never forget. At the end of this congress I applied together with three awesome people for the international Oversight Committee. This gave me a chance to learn more about the way EESTEC international worked and support the International Board in their awesome ideas.

As a local board it’s easy to work together since you’re always working in the same room. Working together on an international level provided a lot more obstacles than expected. I will never forget the things I learned in this awesome association.

To end my story with something inspirational like the others, I would like to mention the “Golden circle” of life. During my mandate I came across it during a sales training and it changed my perspective quite a bit. Within almost all organisations, including EESTEC, almost everyone knows what we're doing. For us it's bringing students from all over Europe together to make new friends and share knowledge. Most people also know how we achieve these objectives, organising educational workshops and social events. But almost nobody knows is why we do what we do! This is something that happens almost every where, but it is the most important message. The why shouldn't be a goal but a profound reason for our existence, a belief or emotion. For me, EESTEC is about sharing the passion for our fields of studies with other cultures and learning from each other. My dream for EESTEC is that one day, all LCs will be equal and work together on a professional level, giving all our students the possibility to fulfil their dreams throughout Europe.

As Simon Sinek said, Martin Luther King didn't start his speech with “I have a plan” but with “I have a dream” for a reason. So dream on!"

Invitation to participate: Hackathon on AI and Precision Medicine! (Participants as well as Mentors are welcome) It is my pleasure to invite you to participate on a tele-hackathon centered on the intersection between AI and Precision Medicine, that will take place between January 15 and February 15, 2021. There will be weekly coordination meetings with the mentors, and also meetings with the other teams and the organizers. Participants can come in as teams, or can also build teams with other participants (or be assigned to teams by us, if they prefer). Expert mentors will be available, as well as example datasets - but you're most welcome to bring-you-own-dataset if you want! Precision Medicine aims towards customized personalized diagnosis and treatment for each person, on the basis of individual differences (gender, genetics, socio-cultural etc.) instead of "one-size-fits-all"), and AI and Data Science are catalytic enablers of precision medicine, which has recently started to become possible and has demonstrated its immense space for improvement of existing approaches. In many conditions, for example COVID-19 or Alzheimer's, strong differences exist between males and females; which often extend all the way to the biological level - and thus having customized approaches can produce significant benefits. The hackathon is organized by the "Women's Brain Project", an international non-profit organization international non-profit organization focused on s*x and gender determinants of brain and mental health as a gateway to precision medicine. For more information and for registrations: http://www.womensbrainproject.com/WBP-Hackathon Past congresses of WBP took place at EPFL Lausanne (2017) and ETH Zurich (2019)
