FIVE YEARS AGO!
Dance and Plastic Arts in the venerable St Sulpice Church in Paris

January 4th 2015 : The place chosen was the peristyle chapel, usually closed to the public which was exceptionally open for three weeks.
An enigmatic installation by Anne Poivilliers awaited the visitor there: long transparent and diaphanous filaments descending from the vault of the chapel.
Valérie Miquel CID Member presented a choreography inspired by the installation of Anne Poivilliers and the strong spirituality of the chapel
Valerie wrote
“I was transported by the force of the place and my deep and powerful inspiration that I felt like I was flying away”

ALL SOULS DAY November 2d
For the catholics the “Day of the Dead” follows All Saints Day.
Whether we believe or not in souls or just doubt , “DEATH IS THE ULTIMATE MYSTERY ” as the early christian scholars put it . It remains in some way a burning question to all of us. The requiem masses constitute a heartbreaking consolation .

Almost all cultures and spiritualities, at least from the very beginning of human history, try to establish a communication with the spirits of our close ancestors as well as of important spirits and DANCE IS ALWAYS PRESENT . Some examples :

-In China, the “Qingming Festival” is an opportunity to remember and honour ancestors at grave sites.

-in many Traditional African Religions “Dances of possession and summoning “share one common link: A call to a Spirit. These spirits can be the spirits of Plants or Forests, Ancestors, or Deities.

-“The Ghost Dance” movement of the late 1800s was a religious revitalization movement in the Western United States. The Ghost Dance was created in a time of genocide, to save the lives of the Native Americans by enabling them to survive the current and coming catastrophes, by calling the dead to fight on their behalf, and to help them drive the colonists out of their lands

-In Tibet, the “dance of the Cemetery Lords” is practiced to display the fearless qualities of those who have passed beyond ego, the protectors of truth. The dance is usually performed at the end of the year during the seven-day festival, when the negative forces accumulated during the year are purified.

It is also worthy of mentioning the choreography of Yoann Bourgeois on Mozart’s requiem

CAN WE DANCE WHILE DEBATING ?

People dance on many circumstances ....
Even during a theological debate !

Some buddhist monks do it!
St Francis of Assisi danced sometimes while preaching !

The debate of Tibetan Buddhist monks is a unique way of learning,In intense debates, we often hear people clapping, we see movements of the legs, these are the external signs of the collision of intense ideas.

The photos are showing monks debating in the monastery Rab de Yushu in Qinghai province
and a bronze statue of St. Francis with wings instead of arms, and dancing

“DANCE, AND YOUR VEILS WHICH HIDE THE LIGHT SHALL SWIRL IN A HEAP AT YOUR FEET.”
Djalâl ad-Dîn Rûmî

“Rumi , hearing a day in a bazaar a fox skin salesman repeating Dilkou Dilkou (the fox), begins to dance by repeating Dil Kou, Dil Kou (where is the heart)?
The Sufis, following the Fathers of the Church, call “ear of the heart”, the capacity to access the other state of consciousness beyond appearance.”
France Schott Billman

What an ocean of beauty , wisdom and eternity springs from this Giant of the Spirit . He never stopped to inspire dancers!

Lone Rørly danced on His poem “Story Water “ during the 54th World Congress of CID last summer. If you wish to visualise her video please contact me

In 2007 UNESCO honoured His 800th anniversary

I cannot stop thinking of his message to everyone of us :

“WHY DO YOU STAY IN PRISON WHEN THE DOOR IS SO WIDE OPEN?”

VENI CREATOR SPIRITUS

Come, Holy Spirit, Creator, come
from thy bright heavenly throne
come, take possession of our souls
and make them all thine own
You who are called the Comforter
best gift of God above
the living spring, the living fire
sweet unction and true love

HAG PESSAH SAMEAH ! HAPPY PESSAH !

Pessah is the celebration of freedom and the end of the enslavement of man by man.

All year long we can meditate individually on the Exodus from Egypt and its profound meaning , but on Pessah evening the message of liberty is proclaimed to all humans!

This triumph of freedom was celebrated by DANCE!

Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing (Exodus 15:20)

"THOU THAT DANCEST, PERCEIVE WHAT I DO, FOR THINE IS THIS PASSION OF THE MANHOOD, WHICH I AM ABOUT TO SUFFER"

Thursday of the Holy Week !

Christians remember the Last Supper which preceded the Passion of Christ

The apocryphal Acts of John present a unique testimony of Jesus dancing with his disciples on a very spiritual hymn , a food for dance and spirituality

Enjoy the poetry : (and enjoy also Gustav Holst's music! )

Glory be to thee, Father.
And we, going about in a ring, answered him: Amen.
Glory be to thee, Word: Glory be to thee, Grace. Amen.
Glory be to thee, Spirit: Glory be to thee, Holy One:
Glory be to thy glory. Amen.
We praise thee, O Father; we give thanks to thee, O Light, wherein darkness
dwelleth not. Amen.
95 Now whereas (or wherefore) we give thanks, I say:
I would be saved, and I would save. Amen.
I would be loosed, and I would loose. Amen.
I would be wounded, and I would wound. Amen.
I would be born, and I would bear. Amen.
I would eat, and I would be eaten. Amen.
I would hear, and I would be heard. Amen.
I would be thought, being wholly thought. Amen.
I would be washed, and I would wash. Amen.
Grace danceth. I would pipe; dance ye all. Amen.
I would mourn: lament ye all. Amen.
The number Eight (lit. one ogdoad) singeth praise with us. Amen.
The number Twelve danceth on high. Amen.
The Whole on high hath part in our dancing. Amen.
Whoso danceth not, knoweth not what cometh to pass. Amen.
I would flee, and I would stay. Amen.
I would adorn, and I would be adorned. Amen.
I would be united, and I would unite. Amen.
A house I have not, and I have houses. Amen.
A place I have not, and I have places. Amen.
A temple I have not, and I have temples. Amen.
A lamp am I to thee that beholdest me. Amen.
A mirror am I to thee that perceivest me. Amen.
A door am I to thee that knockest at me. Amen.
A way am I to thee a wayfarer. [amen].
96 Now answer thou (or as thou respondest) unto my dancing. Behold thyself in me who speak, and seeing what I do, keep silence about my mysteries.
Thou that dancest, perceive what I do, for thine is this passion of the manhood, which I am about to suffer.

“I believe that dance is the oldest, noblest and most cogent of the arts. I believe that dance is the most perfect symbol of the activity of God and His angels. I believe that dance has the power to heal, mentally and physically. I believe that true education in the art of dance is education of the whole man.”
— Ted Shawn
