European Physical Society The European Physical Society (EPS) is a not for profit association whose purpose is to promote physics and physicists in Europe. The European Physical Society was founded at CERN to promote physics in Europe.

The EPS membership includes the national physical societies of 42 countries - including the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft, the world's largest organisation of physicists - and over 3200 individual members.

Kernreaktionen stellen die Energie bereit, die Sterne vor dem gravitativen Kollaps bewahrt, und erzeugen neue Elemente. Um den Ursprung der chemischen Elemente zu verstehen, arbeiten theoretische und experimentelle Kernphysik, Astronomie, Astrophysik und Kosmologie eng zusammen in der sogenannten Nuklearen Astrophysik.

Zu diesem interdiszipliären Forschungsgebiet haben auch viele Frauen entscheidend beigetragen. Zwölf von ihnen ehrt nun ein Kalender für 2021 (http://www.chetec.eu/news/calendar-of-women-scientists-who-made-nuclear-astrophysics-many-language-versions-available). Neben berühmten Frauen wie Marie Curie und Lise Meitner stellen die Kurzbiographien auch einige Physikerinnen und Astronominnen vor, die bisher wohl nur innerhalb des Feldes bekannt waren.

Die Kalenderblätter sind graphisch anspruchsvoll gestaltet und stehen zum Download in 24 Sprachen zur Verfügung. Das außergewöhnliche Projekt haben die COST ChETEC Action (CA16117, https://chetec.eu, Chemical Elements as Tracers of the Evolution of the Cosmos), das Joint Institute for Astrophysics (JINA-CEE, https://www.jinaweb.org/) in den USA und das IReNA International Network for Nuclear Astrophysics (https://www.irenaweb.org/) gemeinsam ermöglicht. Wow! Just captured my most detailed International Space Station lunar transit photo to date. Crew Dragon Resilience is barely distinguishable at the top-center of the station.

This transit of the moon lasted a mere 0.56 seconds, but with an extremely tight field of view — an effective 3600mm full frame equivalent focal length — the effective transit length was even shorter.

Taken at 10:35:06pm with a Orion 10” Dobsonian telescope + 2x Barlow lens on a Nikon D500 in Lakeland, Florida.

Thanks to my buddy James Boone for meeting up and lending me the telescope, and for the setup advice! With such a tight effective focal length, lining up the scope by hand in the final seconds before the transit was quite the challenge.

Grund zum Jubeln! 🎉
Anlässlich des 175. Gründungsjubiläums überreichte die britische Schwestergesellschaft Institute of Physics (IOP), die selbst ihr 100. Jubiläum feiert, der #DPG die Replik einer historischen Röntgenröhre. Ein symbolträchtiges Geschenk, jährt sich die Entdeckung der Röntgenstrahlen in diesem Jahr doch zum 125-ten Mal. Die Röntgenröhre fand ihre neue Heimat auf einer antiken Anrichte im „Heraeus-Raum“ des Physikzentrums Bad Honnef.
Die DPG freut sich sehr über das Präsent und die gute Zusammenarbeit der beiden Gesellschaften – jetzt und in Zukunft.

While people around the world isolated themselves at home, life continued as normal at Concordia station in Antarctica. “Who would have thought we didn’t have to come all the way here to study isolation,” says ESA-sponsored medical doctor Stijn Thoolen. Throughout the year, Stijn has been busy studying the effects of isolation, confinement and extreme environments on the human body and mind. But his tour is nearly over and another doctor will shortly take his place. El 9 y 10 de diciembre (9:30-13:15 GMT0), tendrá lugar el seminario online “Explorando el Universo más Extremo desde Canarias con CTA”, organizado por el CTA Observatory y la Fundación Starlight, y con la colaboración del IAC - Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias. El seminario, dirigido a los miembros de la Fundación Starlight, permitirá a los participantes adentrarse en la ciencia, tecnología y programas de divulgación en Canarias del observatorio de rayos gamma más grande y sensible del mundo, el Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), para lo cual contará con siete ponentes expertos.
