Εθνικό Θέατρο / National Theatre of Greece

This Saturday, 25th of July, tune in for the first time ever to a live ancient Greek drama performance streamed globally from the ancient theatre of Epidaurus.

"The Persians", directed by Εθνικό Θέατρο / National Theatre of Greece artistic director Dimitris Lignadis, will be live-streamed at 21:00 Athens time (GMT+2) on Youtube with English subtitles.

For more information follow Εθνικό Θέατρο / National Theatre of Greece and https://www.livefromepidaurus.gr/

Live from Epidaurus | "The Persians" by Aeschylus directed by Artistic Director Dimitris Lignadis | The countdown has begun at https://www.livefromepidaurus.gr/

Aeschylus’ The Persians, the first performance of an ancient drama at Epidaurus in the post-Covid era, premieres on Friday, 24 July 2020. The production, helmed by the Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Greece, Dimitris Lignadis, will be live-streamed worldwide, with the exception of Greece, on Saturday 25 July, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Sport, as part of this year's Athens and Epidaurus Festival. In this way, anyone who is unable to travel to Greece because of the pandemic will have the opportunity to see the play performed live in the most beautiful theatre in the world, in the country where western drama was born. Of course, streaming cannot replace the experience of going to the theatre and being present in the moment of the performance. The live interaction between actors and audience will always be unique and that is why we encourage those who are in Greece to go to the theatre.

The Persians is the oldest drama that has survived in full and is at the same time a historical account of the most important conflict in the second Persian invasion of Greece, the Battle of Salamis, which took place exactly 2500 years ago.

The performance, which lasts about 90 minutes, will be live-streamed at 9pm Greek time on Saturday 25 July, in partnership with Google Greece. It will be available worldwide, with the exception of Greece, exclusively through YouTube, with English subtitles. It will be available at livefromepidaurus.gr and will also be accessible through the websites of the National Theatre of Greece (NTG), the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, and the Ministry of Culture and Sport, as well as directly via the NTG channel on YouTube.

As has already been announced, the performance will be available for free and anyone who wishes to do so, will be able to make a donation to support the National Theatre of Greece, its artistic needs and human capital. International donations can only be made through a special application hosted on livefromepidaurus.gr.

Starting today and until July 10th you can be part of a unique experience: the first online premiere of Kolozsvári Állami Magyar Színház (Hungarian Theatre of Cluj). "POOL (No water)" by Mark Ravenhill is a cynical satire on the art world and its (moral) mediocrity. Nonetheless, it is also a play about contemporary society, in which even the rights to one's own body image are negotiable.

"Exactamente Antunes"
from Jacinto Lucas Pires
based upon "Nome de Guerra" from Almada Negreiros
directed by Cristina Carvalhal and Nuno Carinhas
video realization Pedro Filipe Marques

“Ours is not the century of inventing words. The words have already been invented. Ours is the century of inventing anew the words already invented.” It is as if Jacinto Lucas Pires, with Exactamente Antunes [Exactly Antunes], had accepted Almada Negreiros’ challenge by bringing the latter’s novel Nome de Guerra to the stage. A work of amazing naiveté, Almada’s book takes us into the initiatic itinerary of Antunes, a man from the country who, shaken by the hazards of luck in the big city, amasses enough experience to conclude that… no knowledge comes from amassing experience. In the play, Jacinto Lucas Pires explores the theatrical potential of this “show of a man wrestling himself”, while Nuno Carinhas takes up, as stage director and costume designer, the task of rendering in 3-D this “masterpiece of drawing”, in the words of poet David Mourão-Ferreira. Stage direction is shared with Cristina Carvalhal, as a celebration of the genius of Almada, for whom the theatre is “the showcase of all arts”.

Teatro India - Teatro di Roma is a non-traditional space, a very original experience that synthesizes the idea of a place open to the experimentation of artistic languages. Starting Friday, 22nd of May, and until Sunday, 24th of May, Teatro Nacional São João is streaming "Alma", a performance directed by Nuno Carinhas, after Gil Vicente's play "Auto da Alma".
This play recreates the ages-old metaphor of life as a pilgrimage – a path of hardship, change and discovery. With its devils, angels, doctors of the Church and a ‘wayfaring soul’ that is at once an allegory of all souls and the dramatic incarnation of an individual personality, Alma powerfully questions human nature, its freedom and ultimate fate, its inscription in time and quest for eternity. An immensely divine and hence deeply human work by an author whom Teixeira de Pascoaes called “the most angelic and demonic of all Portuguese poets”.

Informations générales

The Union des Théâtres de l’Europe (UTE) is an alliance of European theatres, legally headquartered in France. It operates on a European scale, thanks to a decentralized structure made of an executive office in Germany, and a nomadic office in Greece. Regarded as one of the most influential theatre associations in Europe, the Union des Théâtres de l’Europe is also deeply rooted in the history of European theatre. Its origin goes back more than thirty years, when three theatres in Italy, France and Spain decided to form an international alliance called “Théâtres de l’Europe/Teatri d’Europa”. More and more theatres became interested in this exchange, and in 1990 the French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, and the director of the Piccolo Teatro di Milano, Giorgio Strehler, founded the “Union des Théâtres de l’Europe” on this basis. First centred on a programme of regular festivals with the aim to unite East and West, the union has developed into an alliance of European theatres combining artistic and political goals, and using existing artistic platforms in order to strengthen professional exchange and to promote an open Europe of culture. Today, the Union des Théâtres de l’Europe unites more than 40 members, amongst which 20 major theatres with national and international influence from all over Europe and beyond. The theatres from Porto, Moscow, Bochum, Tel Aviv, Athens, Cluj, Reims, Vienna, Belgrade, Bucharest, Stuttgart, Luxemburg, Sofia, Milan, Prague, Thessaloniki, Rome, Budapest and Cologne completed with independent and associated members from France, Hungary, Poland and Georgia are represented in 17 countries. Their goal is to collaborate on an international level and strengthen the role and value of European public theatres. Together they represent an area that increasingly encompasses the entire European continent and even transcends it with members in Israel, Palestine and partner-artists in various Arab countries. With more than 10,000 performances and 3 million spectators a year, UTE member theatres offer a wide range of events, including productions, world premieres of new drama; projects on current political issues; cooperation between various international festivals; conferences on important political and artistic topics; roundtables with artists, managers and politicians intended to attract and include a broader audience; projects with young artists and young audiences; masterclasses; literary and academic publications; and think tanks for the development of new working strategies. Elected Cultural Ambassador by the European Commission in 2012, head of a project on different forms of terrorism, including Israeli, Norwegian, German, French and Serbian theatres, and elected as one of the most significant theatre network to be supported by the European Commission (CONFLICT ZONES | ZONES DE CONFLIT), the UTE sees its mission in an artistic, political and societal sphere. Its activities go along three major axes: the development of international and transnational collaborations; the maintenance and transmission of Europe’s cultural heritage, focusing on its appropriation by young artists; and the questioning, development and renewal of this heritage through ground-breaking artistic projects, but also political projects, all of which offer a critical reflection on today’s society.
