Liebe Freund*innen,

Julia Haarmann

//

Dear friends,

an exceptional year comes to an end and a chapter. For ten years, CAT Cologne has invited young artists from all over the world and reflected on relevant topics and current debates with its projects.

I look back on a wonderful and exciting time, full of gratitude for numerous valuable encounters and collaborations. From January I will continue my work in the area of artist residencies as director of Stiftung Künstlerdorf Schöppingen.

The CAT Cologne residency program will not be continued for the time being. BorderlessTV will be continued under the direction of Alaa Nassif Makki, Zein Alabdein Alali Alsalem and Luis Nuñez (advising Felipe Castelblanco, Nahal Tavangar and myself).

I wish you a happy new year 2021 and I look forward to seeing our paths cross again.

Goodbye and see you soon!
Julia Haarmann

Today I am very grateful for the opportunity to bring many voices, concerns and experiences, together with Khanyisile Mbongwa, into one exhibition. Ideas that had grown over many years took shape.

Thanks a million to all companions 💙

view from the exhibition #17:

"Saakhelu Hack" is a performance and sculpture by Camilo Pachón with Jumu Monster, Ana Cardenas and Friedrich Boell.

Between August and September in the southwest of Colombia, the Nasa Yuwe People celebrate the Saakhelu Kiwe Kame, the most sacred ritual of their community, a collective offering to nature that promotes its cosmogony, strengthens its connection with the earth, its traditions and the resistance to the extractive development projects that threaten their territories.

Saakhelu Hack is a collective interdisciplinary work in which Pachón, together with Berlin-based artist Jumu Monster, Ana Maria Contreras performer artist based in Bogotá and Friedrich Boell digital artist based in Cologne, translates the ritual practices of masquerades, the language of the body and the code; in a contemporary ritual in which KUKA -the flagship industrial robot of German industry and the technologies of contemporary extractivist civilization- pays tribute to nature, the power of the mask in its territory, and communities like NASA throughout the world resists the global development model and protects the spiritual connection between man and his ecosystems.

Saakhelu Hack is a dialogue between man and machine, between spirituality and materiality, between nature and its minerals, metal and the invisible, subject and object, a collective exercise of creation and thought that confronts it to the distancing and the own individuality of our times.

view from the exhibition #16:

Claudia Robles-Angel's REFLEXION - In Sync / Out of Sync - is a real-time light and sound installation consisting of electroluminescent (EL) wires and surround sound. The main concept is based on research showing that our heartbeats can be synchronised by deepening the perception of others.
Two visitors are invited to sit in front of each other surrounded by a light structure made of EL wires. This light structure is steered by their heartbeats measured with finger pulse sensors. When the two participants do not share the same frequency of their heartbeats, the installation is in an Out-of Sync state and the sound becomes dissonant; when their heart frequencies are synchronised, the installation reacts in an In-Sync state, with agreeable and non-dissonant sound in the surround soundscape.

The realization of this installation was funded by Innogy Stiftung für Energie und Gesellschaft for its world premiere in October 2019 at Kunst Station Sankt Peter Cologne.

view from the exhibition #15:

Hiwa K's "Pin-down" (2017) stages an intellectual wrestling game between Hiwa K and Bakir Ali, an Iraqi-Kurdish philosopher and writer currently working as a taxi driver in Berlin. Over the past years the artist and the philosopher have had wide-ranging poetic and philosophical conversations, which initially took place in intimate settings. Together they discussed the Kurdish question, ideas of non-belonging and “tracelessness”, “horizontalism” versus “verticalism” and an unfixed understanding of the world. Recently, however, these encounters have shifted towards intense, and notably amateurish, wrestling-sessions, in which the movement of bodies acts as a memory tool. These unfold not as prescribed performative gestures but rather organically, anytime the conversation comes to a verbal impasse. For Pin-down, Hiwa K challenges Bakir Ali to a public “battle” staged at the renowned El Otmani Gym fight club in Amsterdam Nieuw-West.

view from the exhibition #14:

"Cartographies of the Unseen" is an ongoing artistic research project by Felipe Castelblanco. Part of this project and installation is "Rio Arriba [Upriver]:
A Cinematic Cartography Through a Vertical Landscape".

Up-River is an experimental film developed after a journey upstream the Putumayo River in the southwest of Colombia. This journey becomes a filmic map of the territory from various altitudes, which then reveal a complex eco-social landscape extending through the jungle and all the way to the high Andean mountains. In these regions, indigenous philosophies, trees, soils, clouds, temperature, light and shadow reveal new aesthetics, agency and forms of bio-cultural resistance.

The Putumayo, Cauca and Nariño states in the south west of Colombia are contested and extremely rich territories. For the last 400 years (or more) these regions have embodied dispossession, cultural extermination, colonialism, drug wars and lately natural devastation due to resource-extracting interests. These regions are a ‘residual spaces’ so rich that it gives birth to the Amazon ecosystem. Also, its endangered history and native cultures are the key to a portal where parallel epistemologies of space, time, environmental justice, bio-cultural models exist.

view from the exhibition #13:

Sam Hopkins' "Made in Chinafrica" (2020) is a series of short animated tales for social media that illustrate the risks and rewards of the African migrant experience in China. It is the third iteration of the research project The Qilin and a collaboration with David Lalé.

„The Qilin“ is a research and film project that inquires into, and explores, the world of African traders living and working Guangzhou, the South China export hub. Over the past four years Hopkins and Lalé have developed a rich corpus of material, ranging from documentary footage of the immense wholesale markets, to testimonies of African businesspeople, to interviews with intellectual property investigators and discussions with ethnographers.

BorderlessTV is committed to equal access to society and job opportunities. It strives for creating new structures and perspectives so that people can tell their story without stereotyped thinking. The storytelling and media collective produces audiovisual content. BorderlessTV works as a participatory platform and supports its members in the self-determined design of content through media. The collective serves to promote young people and to help them shape local structures. BorderlessTV was initiated by and emerged from Felipe Castelblanco's residence with CAT Cologne in 2016.

Javier Tapia’s „Karma Landscape” is a site specific work which draws references and images from different forms of illustrations - history books, art history, botanical illustrations, nature photography and anthropology. The work is a bi-dimensional comment on the history of representation, the history of painting, the history of colonization and Eurocentric story telling.

„City Speaks – A Conversation at the Dinner Table”

This sound collage by Ilka Geyer and Mick Schulz derives from their collaboration with CAT's artist-in-residence John Monteith in 2012. The sound piece, with excerpts from conversations taken throughout the project, offers insights into the negotiations and discussions around the collaboration and therefore into the process of co-creation.

A new place exists for us to find together!

During his residency with CAT Cologne, Adam J Scarborough invited to design a community of the future. The panel for his „Imagining-No-Place” conversations was a mobile pop-up island, which was placed in public spaces in Cologne. Packed with a range of materials for this ride into the future, the island functioned as a performative projection of ideas of sustainability and visions of an ideal place and people of the future.

The work of South African performer and artist Ntando Cele is constantly oscillating between stage and screen, exploring how to enhance the human expression. In „The Crown“, she is searching for ways to convey physical freedom on a dance stage, connecting to the historical implication of Black female bodies who have graced European stages.

Daan den Houter "Icepaintings" (frozen paint)

The last 3 years den Houter is working on ice-paintings. These paintings exist of frozen paint,
when shown they slowly melt, ending in a pool of paint on the floor leaving a trace on the wall.
The paintings transform during their existence in shape and color. A painting which directly transforms into a memory.

Our Story

The artist residency CAT (“Community Art Team”) Cologne was founded in 2010 as a non-profit organization.

CAT Cologne supports international emerging artists working in the field of social practice and community engaged work. During a working grant to spend 1-3 months in Cologne, artists are invited to realize a process-oriented project that picks up issues that are specific to context and engages with local communities. Each project closes with a small publication and a final presentation. A number of social events such as Dinner Parties and Brunches are part of the framing program.

The project’s task is to support the dialogue between diverse communities and engage them to their own constructive actionism by providing clever and creative ways of participation.
