WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! Read below to see if any of these volunteer opportunities interest you!

Stitch and Sew: We are seeking experienced sewers/sewing machine operators who want to join our Stitch and Sew program and help community members make things like ribbon skirts, moccasins, and pow wow regalia. You don't need to have specific knowledge of these things! We will provide the teachings (to you and the participants), but we need people who can help us teach community members to sew. This is a great opportunity to engage with Indigenous culture! Fridays from 10am-1pm.

Harm Reduction Outreach Team: Join our Harm Reduction Outreach Team to distribute safer drug use supplies and information to the community, clean up our streets, and build new connections with community members who need our support. Our knowledgeable Harm Reduction Coordinator will train you and teach you everything you need to know. Fridays from 10am-1pm.

Harvest Manitoba Pickup: Preferably someone with a van, truck, or another large vehicle who can pick up surplus food from the Harvest Manitoba warehouse for us to distribute in the community. They give us really great stuff — lots of produce and healthy food. All we need is someone to pick it up! Pickup Mondays at 3pm.

If any of these volunteer opportunities interest you, please email our Community Facilitator, Josh Ward, at [email protected]!

Due to some unexpected events, we've had to postpone our first pop up shop. However, guests are still accessing weather appropriate clothing so we are always accepting donations of gently used or new clothes. This includes what you make from Sew Much Love! We are also still accepting monetary donations through our site so we can purchase winter kits for our guests: https://www.1justcity.ca/layers-of-love

For the next few weeks, 1JustCity’s Board will be celebrating the incredible work of our staff. Today, we’re recognizing Indigenous Cultural Program Director Lori Abraham.

Lori has spent years learning from ceremony and Elders from her home community of Sagkeeng First Nation. She brings her knowledge to the 1JustCity community by teaching how to smudge, conducting sharing circles, teaching beading and sewing and facilitating an interactive language bingo. She is also devoted to providing barrier-free access to language, ceremony and cultural teachings.

One of Lori’s proudest moments from her work during the pandemic is the Demonstration Pow Wow, where the community showed up to dance and celebrate Indigenous values. She feels that connecting folks with their Indigenous identities helps to create a sense of pride.

1JustCity and everyone in the community is so fortunate for the ways that Lori’s work impacts peoples’ lives and builds capacity. She is accepting, compassionate, and committed to being a force for good.

Thank you Lori!

Yay! We love partnering with awesome people to help us grow and change to better serve our community! Thank you Nicole and Sheila and Sooka Design

Spark match! 1JustCity was matched with Sheila Yong and Nicole Blonski from Sooka Design.

Together, they worked with the organization and building stakeholders to develop a concept plan for a kitchen expansion in their space at the Crossways in Common building.

Thank you so much to Red Horse Connection for a wonderful day yesterday!

Many of our guests were at ease, relaxed and connected to the horses Sadie and Penny.

Many of our guests mentioned how long its been since they've been out of the city limits or on a ranch. For others this was a re connection to their experience with horses. For some this was their first time. We’re so happy they were able to give our guests this experience with Red Horse Connection!

The underloved community in Winnipeg doesn’t always have access to clean clothes, nice clothes, clothes that fit them properly, and clothes that are able to withstand the harsh Manitoba climate.

That’s why we at 1JustCity are launching Layers of Love, our first-ever seasonal pop-up shop! We believe that everyone deserves to feel dignified in how they look, and that starts with being able to choose the clothes they put on their bodies.

Our first Layers of Love seasonal pop-up shop will be from October 15 to October 16, 2021. For more information on donations, sponsorships, and volunteer opportunities, visit 1justcity.ca/layers-of-love.

ACCESS STORAGE has been an incredible partner and we want to give them a HUGE thank you!! With two free storage containers from Access Storage, we have been able to keep non-perishable food, toiletries, and clothes for our guests that we can access whenever needed.

Coming soon we are launching our dignity store, Layers of Love, where our guests can keep their seasonal clothes, and receive new clothes as they need them from the storage container. This project wouldn't be possible without the space from Access Storage. Stay tuned for more information about the store and how you can get involved!

Our programs provide immediate needs like food, showers, laundry, etc. but more crucially; safety and stabilization to individuals at risk of mental health crises, peer advocates to support people at their most vulnerable. Volunteer, Donate, Connect! www.1justcity.ca Our four outreach ministries (West Broadway, St. Matthew’s-Maryland, Oak Table, North End Stella and Rainbow Ministry) serve those living with addictions, those without a place to call home, or those shunned by others based on race, income and sexual orientation. The need for their presence continues to grow, especially in these times of economic stress. We believe that everyone would like to make their city, their country and their world a better place but just need the right avenue to express their gift. We hope we can help you find that avenue.
