Happy Caregiver Day! Did you know that family caregivers represent almost 30% of Toronto’s population? They provide compassionate care to those in need of assistance due to disability, chronic illness, frailty, or age.

Being a caregiver is a difficult job. Often, caregivers help others at the expense of their own self-care, with limited resources and having to balance the strains of work and family life. On Caregiver Day, we show appreciation for our caregivers by learning from them and listening to their inspiring stories.

At SPRINT Senior Care, we are proud to provide services to help caregivers through our day programs, home care relief services, and support groups.

A big thank you to Maggie and Carolyn who donated cloth masks to us this week!

On behalf of the Toronto Doctors Lions Club, Maggie donated 300 masks, and Carolyn gifted an additional 100 masks that she sewed herself. These masks will be available for visitors, volunteers, and staff (in non-care settings) to use as needed.

It is through the help of donations like these that we are able to accomplish everything we do for our seniors!

Our wellness packages are ready to go!

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, this can be a lonely time for seniors who live alone or are dealing with food insecurity. We have put together care packages that include food and recreation items to ensure these seniors can enjoy this long weekend. These will go out to our highest-need clients as well as those who could use a boost at this time of year.

As we prepare for a possible second wave of COVID-19 this fall, some are concerned the flu season might overwhelm hospitals and hinder efforts to stamp out COVID-19.

The best way for us avoid this is to prevent the flu and other viruses in the first place.

Here are a few ways you can help make this happen:

✅Get the flu shot when it becomes available
✅Maintain good hand hygiene
✅Maintain physical distance from others
✅Wear a mask

We have two new vehicles in our fleet! Thanks to generous funding from the Rotary Club of Toronto Charitable Foundation, we recently acquired a Toyota sedan and van. Having these additional vehicles will help our program immensely, particularly during COVID-19 as we offer single-passenger rides only.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:
Meet Jan, a longtime SPRINT Senior Care volunteer who found herself wanting to help in a greater capacity during the pandemic.

“About two years ago, I was asked to volunteer for the Peer Support Group. There were about 8 to 14 clients, and every week I came in and set up a lunch and tea for them”, she says. “A lady from Baycrest would come in and talk about fire or fall prevention, how to clean your fridge – all different topics. That ended when COVID started in March, but I was doing that every Friday. It was fantastic.”

Jan has a deep fondness for SPRINT Senior Care and values the friendships and connections she has made throughout her time here. So, when COVID-19 hit, she wasn’t ready to give up volunteering. Instead, she devoted her time to other programs. Currently, Jan volunteers as a meal packer every Tuesday and Friday as part of our Freshii meal delivery program, “but whenever they need someone, they know I’m available to help with any task,” she shares.

“The longer I’ve been here, the more I’ve gotten to know the people, so you become part of the team, and I really enjoy being part of a team environment. Everyone seems so happy here, they’re all involved, and it’s such a positive atmosphere”.

Thank you Jan, for your ongoing dedication and commitment to SPRINT Senior Care!

Even during a pandemic, it’s important for seniors to get outside and enjoy some fresh air while keeping their distance from others. At SPRINT Senior Care, our PSWs and Recreation staff assist clients on walks to help them soak in some sunshine. Recently, Stephanie and Puja came across a “thank you frontline heroes” sign while on a walk and had to stop for a photo! They are pictured here with clients Sandy, Fred, and Ilinka.

Take a sneak peek at one of our latest COVID-19 safety measures: The SPRINT Senior Care bus has been retrofitted with plexiglass between seats. We have also installed similar plexiglass barriers in the rest of our fleet. This new feature, in addition to our other COVID-19 safety protocols, will ensure our clients and staff stay healthy and protected.

Due to the suspension of our Adult Day Program, our staff have been busy visiting clients at home and leading one-on-one activities, including brain games, puzzles, and taking them outside for walks. These visits are helpful in keeping our dementia care clients stimulated and socialized during this time of self-isolation. Here is a photo of a client and staff member during a one-on-one visit.

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the Scheinberg Relief Fund for selecting SPRINT Senior Care as one of the few Toronto charities to receive a grant. In response to COVID-19, Mark Scheinberg and family have established a relief fund to support organizations tackling the impact of the virus on vulnerable people.

This donation will support our COVID-19 Community Response Team and ensure our seniors can continue to receive food and other social supports in the months ahead.

Thank you to Mark Scheinberg and his family for doing their part to help the international community!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:

When William’s university shut down in March, he decided to get involved in his community to help those affected by the pandemic. Since then, he’s been volunteering with SPRINT Senior Care, delivering groceries and conducting weekly wellness checks. As part of the wellness check program, he phones seniors to check-in with them and discuss any struggles they are facing.

William has a strong connection with the seniors he interacts with, partially due to his upbringing.

“I was raised by my grandparents because my parents were working, so from a young age I’ve had a personal connection with seniors. Because of this, I’m more empathetic towards caring for the senior population,” he says.

“When interacting with the seniors, I’m trying to provide them with mental comfort, especially during these trying times, and that has been a major source of joy for me. Knowing their struggles and how isolated they are makes me appreciate my role as a volunteer.”

William has also seen just how meaningful and impactful the food delivery service is. “It allows seniors to stay home and lowers the risk of them contracting the virus. It’s a generous program and it encourages our younger generation to support those seniors and understand the struggles they may be facing.”

“I’m honoured to be able to participate in this type of activity.”

Thank you William, for all that you do to support the SPRINT Senior Care community!

These programs take place once a day and are delivered over Zoom, with activities including karaoke, trivia, fitness classes, and much more! Here is Daphnie, one of our wonderful ADP staff members, leading clients through a virtual exercise class.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:

This week’s spotlight features two SPRINT Senior Care volunteers: Meet Troy and Alexis, who started volunteering in March with our COVID-19 Community Response Team. Both volunteer as delivery drivers with our Meals on Wheels program, and Alexis also helps out with packing meals for our Freshii program.

“We live across the street [from head office], so we’ve seen SPRINT Senior Care for years, but only just started volunteering now,” Troy says. “COVID was really a reminder for us; we both believe that volunteering is important and it’s how we look out for one other. We knew that seniors needed our support at this time, and we knew a bit about SPRINT Senior Care so we thought it would be a good idea.”

When asked about the best part of their time volunteering with SPRINT Senior Care, they each shared their own stories.

Alexis shares how rewarding it has been to be surrounded by others while contributing to the community. “I personally have enjoyed meeting and getting to know the people I pack with. It’s nice to interact with people in a safe way, while doing something meaningful, which is so different from our jobs, since we both work from home.”

Troy shares: “I do the actual hand-off delivery, and it’s interesting to me how so many of the seniors look forward to it, expect it, and need it. It’s humbling because I didn’t grow up, nor do I exist in an environment where food is something I worry about, so seeing people who are food insecure makes you realize how critical SPRINT Senior Care is for the community.”

Thank you, Troy and Alexis, for all that you do to support our community!
