SWAM Toronto

SWAM Toronto We improve the lives of children with developmental disabilities through barrier-free water safety and swimming instruction, taught by certified volunteers.

SwimAbility Canada is a not-for profit student initiative founded in 2009. Our mission is to provide the organizational and logistical support necessary to facilitate the opening and operation of SwimAbility programs across the country. SwimAbility chapters provide affordable and accessible one-on-one swimming instruction to children with specific needs. We engage vetted student volunteers as service providers of barrier-free water safety and swimming instruction to children with special needs. SwimAbility builds on the institutional strengths and successes of existing swimming lesson organizations. We are able to be more effective in injury prevention by providing lessons specifically targeted and adapted to those children at highest risk of drowning in our society. We recruit our volunteers from the abundance of university-aged, qualified swimming instructors and work with our community partners to properly train, educate and prepare them for the rigours of working with children with specific needs. We rent out pool space twice a week, batch lessons together and assign one instructor to each child. By using innovative techniques to dramatically cut our operating expenses, as well as by actively fundraising, we are able to offer private swimming instruction at a rate affordable even by those living under the poverty line.

FAQs - Please Read

- What are "pairings"?
A pairing is when we match a swimmer to an instructor according to their comfort levels, swimming experiences, etc. A Pairings Email is sent when the match has been made and it will be sent to both the instructor and the swimmer.

- How many swimmers are you accepting?
We are accepting 90 swimmers this session on a first come first serve basis. Once this limit has been reached, an update will be sent out. Swimmers registering past this limit will be put on our waitlist. Waitlisted swimmers can expect to be contacted up to Lesson 4, until which any open spots will be offered to the next swimmer on the list.

- What if we cannot make it to a lesson?
We kindly ask everyone to inform us by email as soon as you know your child cannot attend a lesson. This allows us to notify our volunteer instructors and potentially save them the trip to the pool if they are not needed for that lesson. Some of our volunteers commute up to 2 hours away.

- What if we cannot make it to several lessons?
The fall session each year is the busier of the two sessions. We kindly ask swimmers to attend at least 6 out of the 8 lessons. We completely understand if illnesses/emergencies occur and we are accommodating under those circumstances. However, in the past, we have had swimmers register but only attend very few lessons (ex. 3-4) and their instructors were sad to have missed the opportunity to teach and get to know their swimmers.

- What should we prepare for lessons?
Please arrive 10 minutes early so that there is sufficient time for your child to change into their swimsuits. Please ensure that your child is ready to go by the lesson start time so that we can maximize their time in the pool! If your child requires floaties, goggles, or any other assistive floating devices, please bring them with you. There will be toys, noodles, and flutter boards for them to use at the pool.
The pool is accessible with a ramp going into the building as well as a ramp going down to the pool. There is also a pool lift if needed. If you require assistance, our team members will be on deck to help!

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns!

We look forward to a fun Fall 2019 session with everyone :)
