SLYO-Toronto Chapter

SLYO-Toronto Chapter As the leading youth welfare organization in the world, the goal of SLYO is to provide young people with an empowering environment where they can fully embrace their identity and attain the skills they need, to be leaders in their community.

Building a Better Future: Based on the community leadership involved with our events, our members have started to develop leadership qualities that will be carried throughout their lives. As the Sri Lankan diaspora grows worldwide, we would like to promote the growth of new chapters, hence creating future leaders for generations to come. Our brand of effective charitable events will grow as we continue to expand. We would like to emphasize that SLYO is open to all ethnic groups, as we continue to open ourselves to helping more communities throughout the world.

Great work by the SLYO UK Chapter!

The SLYO UK chapter has chosen to support the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity in London, England as part of their toy drive initiative this holiday season. They initially hoped to provide toys and gifts to underprivileged individuals through this organization by hosting a toy-drive. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions they shifted to hosting a virtual quiz night to be held at 7.30 p.m. on December 4th 2020. The team encourages others to join and to donate money to the charity in the process while playing fun trivia and engaging in friendly competition for a cash prize! The aim of the quiz night is to raise funds and awareness for the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity to support their purchase of toys for children and research in the process.

#Colourism

That nagging thought in your head saying,

'you have been out in the sun too much, you are getting darker'.

Light and fair skin has been considered the prime example of beauty, and we have failed to realise how beautiful our bronzed brown skin really is. Colourism, an issue seeped down into our society due to colonialism, and so deeply entrenched, we let international companies promote skin bleaching products to degrade our beautiful skin.

It's time we create our own beauty standards for our brothers and sisters. Be brown and proud. The sun kissed us harder because we are beautiful.

Thank you for everyone who joined us on Saturday to discuss the issue of colourism. On behalf of Aarthy and the whole SLYO team we would like to thank Aritha Wickramasinghe for joining us.

#colourism

To this little girl and all little girls (or anyone who needs to hear this), your beauty is not defined by the colour of your skin. Dark is beautiful. Light is beautiful. Every shade in between is beautiful. We are all exactly how we are meant to be.

Join us on #VOICEITWITHSLYO this Saturday at 12pm on IGTV for a discussion on #colourism.

Together, let's become better role models 💛

Whilst travelling through Jaffna my family came into acquaintance with the cutest family. The way this little girl and her younger sister showered thambi with love just made me fall head over heels in love with them. We decided to do a little shopping and exploring and this was a little conversation I captured whilst vlogging the trip. ⠀

Is it not so heartbreaking to know that a young child as young as five wholeheartedly BELIEVE she is not attractive because she is of a darker complexion? Speaking to her, I saw little me & probably hundreds and thousands of us who were in her position at one point in our lives and probably still reside within our hearts. I wanted to share this video because it holds a special place in my heart. If you guys want to watch the FULL version of this video the link is in my bio.⠀

Let’s spread love. Let’s spread kindness. Let’s love everyone and go out of our way to undo the wrong doings of society that teaches young children that their worth stems from their external appearance, most especially their complexions. #DarkIsBeautiful #UnfairAndLovely

#Colurism known as daughter of #racism has been around for centuries. It is often argued as being the 'lasting relic of slavery and colonialism'. An issue that affects women across the Asian and African communities, often resulting in bullying and self esteem issues.

How do we empower our women?

Come join us for a discussion with Aritha Wickramasinghe on Saturday at 07.00 a.m.

SLYO

SLYO UK wanted to start a project that would create a space for our youth to voice their opinions. We called it #VoiceItwithSLYO.

We decided to kick start our project by talking about the Black Lives Matter movement. We were joined by Mo Hasan and Natalie Acheampong.

The beauty of this discussion was that we not only talked about racism against the black community, but also racial biases within our own community. We hope that by opening this conversation, we will be more open to making a change and talk about issues within our own community.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped make our first segment a huge success. We would like to thank our guest speakers Mo and Natalie for their valuable input and thank you for everyone who participated.

Join us this weekend for our second segment on #Colourism with Aritha Wickramasinghe.
