Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) - Toronto Visit our webpage at www.icrf.ca History
ICRF was founded in 1975 by a group of American and Canadian medical researchers, oncologists, and lay people who were committed to the growth and development of Israel and to combating the worldwide scourge of cancer.
(4)

These visionaries were determined to harness Israel's educational and scientific resources in the fight against cancer, while stemming the "brain drain" of Israel's best and brightest scientists. Their solution: providing funds for postdoctoral fellowships for young Israeli M.D's and Ph.D.'s. Their solution worked. In addition to ICRF's many achievements and medical breakthroughs by ICRF-supported scientists, the organization now has operating chapters in six cities in three countries - the United States, Canada and Israel -- with its international headquarters in New York City, plus active Boards of Directors for each chapter, an International Board of Trustees, and International Scientific Council, a Scientific Review Panel and a Scientific Advisory Board. Even more, having two ICRF-supported scientists (Professors Avram Hershko and Aaron Ciechanover of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology) receive the 2004 Nobel Prize in chemistry is the kind of news that the founders of ICRF dreamed about in 1975 -- and that we have been hoping to hear ever since. That's an extraordinary achievement for our scientists, for ICRF and for the State of Israel by any measure. Though that achievement garnered headlines around the world, ICRF-supported cancer researchers are responsible for many other major achievements. Achievements
Since its inception in 1975, ICRF has awarded over 1,600 grants valued at over US $36 million directly to Israeli scientists who are working in cancer research in 25 major centres and institutes around Israel. The following are just some of the accomplishments from ICRF-Funded Scientists:

•p53 gene tumor suppressor – this is one of the most important discoveries of the 20th century and has inspired cancer researchers around the world.
•The Philadelphia Chromosome – this is the first genetic link to cancer ever discovered, and has led to the development of Gleevec®, a miracle drug for the treatment of chronic myelogynous leukemia. Gleevec® is now used by over 100,000 people worldwide.
•Doxil® – this cancer drug treats ovarian, breast and AIDS-related cancers.
•RAD 51 - this identifies the likelihood of breast cancer occurring in women who carry the BRCA 2 gene.
•The Ubiquitin System – this discovery led to development of the miracle drug Velcade®, for treatment of multiple myeloma; Velcade® is now used by more than 100,000 people in worldwide.
•Israel winning the Nobel Prize – ICRF-funded Professors Avram Hershko and Aaron Ciechanover won for their discovery of the ubiquitin system. Their research resulted in the development of the drug Velcade®, named “The Top Medical Breakthrough of 2003” by the Wall Street Journal.
•Improved cancer treatment – ICRF scientists have discovered improved chemotherapies and advanced techniques in bone marrow transplantation that have improved the survival rates and eased the suffering of many people now battling cancer.

Dearest ICRF Community,

ICRF joins you in celebrating all the women in our lives who cheer us on, inspire us, teach us and hold a special place in our hearts.

We also celebrate our ICRF cancer scientists, many of whom are moms, for their continuing efforts towards the advancement of cancer research.

While the world continues to grapple with the enormous human impact of Covid 19, we extend our best wishes to all who have been affected, and hope for an end to the pandemic soon.

While Covid-19 will eventually leave us, cancer will unfortunately endure.

This Sunday, on Mother’s Day, honour a mom you love with a donation or an e-card that supports Israeli researchers working tirelessly to find treatments and cures for all forms of cancer. Click here to visit the e-card store: https://icrf.crowdchange.ca/1044/cards

Sending our best wishes for strength and good health to all.

Sincerely,

Bonnie Fish

Board President, ICRF Toronto

We are in the news!

A groundbreaking ICRF-supported study led by Prof. Ronit Satchi-Fainaro at Tel Aviv University | אוניברסיטת תל-אביב has discovered a way to activate the immune system to prevent #glioblastoma - the deadliest and most aggressive #brain cancer - from spreading and progressing in mice.

“Our treatment may be the needed breakthrough in the battle against the most daunting cancer of all. It is paving the way for a new therapy for a disease that hasn’t had anything new in terms of treatment over the last decade."

Hockey had been the focal point of Sam Fields’ life for almost as long as he can remember.

A Chicago native who got into the sport at the age of eight, Fields had been playing professional hockey for about five years when he was tapped for a tryout with the National Hockey League. At the age of 27, he was on the cusp of becoming one of a handful of Jews in the NHL.

Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed as Israel's day of commemoration for the approximately six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust as a result of the actions carried out by Nazi Germany and its collaborators, and for the Jewish resistance in that period.

In Israel, it is a national memorial day. The first official commemorations took place in 1951, and the observance of the day was anchored in a law passed by the Knesset in 1959. Today and everyday we remember.

Prof. Yardena Samuels is an ICRF funded researcher at the Weizmann Institute of Science.

Cancer cells seem to present bacterial peptides on their cell walls, which reveals their existence to the immune system’s T Cells.

Using methods developed by Dr. Ravid Straussman of Weizmann's Molecular Cell Biology Department, a team under Prof. Yardena Samuels led by Dr. Shelly Kalaora and Adi Nagler used samples taken from nine patients to examine 17 melanoma tumors to find out which peptides could be "seen" by the body's own defense system.
