Our April newsletter is out there! Find it here: https://bit.ly/3wi7xi7

DWC has extended its support to communities in NICARAGUA during the pandemic by funding delivery of food and water to vulnerable families. The need here is great. We have partnered with grassroots organization AMELA to deliver this support locally. Moving forward, this partnership will help create self-sufficient economies that allow communities to thrive in very isolated areas.

While it is not possible to travel at this time, new DWC projects in Nicaragua will provide volunteer opportunities that you can join when it is safe to go abroad. This could be constructing a greenhouse, building a latrine for girls at a local school or a water project so families have easier access to clean drinking water.

If community service off the beaten path is up your alley, then Nicaragua is calling your name. Stay in touch. That way, once things do settle down, you’ll be ready to volunteer with us.

RecyBags - One of a kind and proudly Filipino.

Recybags [re-si-bags] is DWC's Filipino partner, Rise Above Foundation Cebu's livelihood program.

In the Philippines, rice and other feed is often packaged in laminated sacks destined for the landfill after one use. Struggling moms without a stable means of supporting their family are being taught a new skill in repurposing this plentiful material to weave a new future for themselves with these artfully woven totebags.

Check out their striking online shop and maybe treat yourself to an upcycled beach tote! This colourful social enterprise is giving new life to people and to materials making for a feel-good shopping experience that positively impacts communities in the developing world.

Giving Tuesday is a day to celebrate giving back.

In 2020 it highlights the struggle and generosity given the extra challenges. At this time of increased need in the countries we work in, DWC would like to extend our gratitude to the businesses and individuals who have responded with incredible generosity this year.

We have been able to directly assist hundreds of families impacted by the coronavirus crisis, with our efforts focused on medical supplies and food and water insecurity. https://bit.ly/37n2rWg

Thank-you for helping us take care of our global community while continuing to support your neighbors, friends, health-care workers and local businesses. Without you we couldn’t do what we do.

Globally, women form the majority of the of the world’s extreme poor. An estimated one in three women will experience gender-based violence in her lifetime.

DWC’s Every Girl program ensures girls enter and stay in the classroom as a crucial measure to end gender violence and eradicate global poverty.

Global Affairs Canada has created 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence and we are pleased to share their campaign:

World Toilet Day | United Nations

Let’s talk about toilets/latrines… they are humble, necessary, and in many cases, lacking.

The safe practice of minimizing human contact with waste has yet to reach much of the developing world. Many live without electricity, plumbing, clean water and still practice open-defecation. They are vulnerable to the elements, to animals and insects, and women risk assaults when venturing out unaccompanied.

Poor sanitation has many costs. It is the largest contributor to serious health implications and deaths. Many of the world’s poorest could not afford a latrine even if they are aware of the impact of their dangerous habits. The cycle of poverty repeats with lost productivity due to illness. Education suffers. Greater development goals are also hindered as soil, air and water supplies become contaminated. Lack of hygiene drives away potential tourism.

DWC continues to improve the health of these households as a major factor in poverty alleviation. It’s a ReveLOOtion.

World Toilet Day is raising awareness about the need for all human beings to have access to sanitation.

In Kampong Khleang, a tiny village in Cambodia, Zun Phoung lives with his wife, Air Sari, and three sons. He relies on fishing to make a living, leaving home early in the morning with his boys and selling what they catch to a local buyer.

Recently Phoung fell ill and is unable to go to the lake with his sons. The boys have less experience and have not been able to earn enough to cover the cost of their father’s medicine plus food for the family. Because there are less buyers due to the pandemic, the price of fish has dropped significantly. Every day their income is shrinking while their expenses have been growing. When the family ran out of money, they had to sell a boat and some of their fishing gear.

In the face of great hardship, they were thankful to receive a relief package to see them through this struggle. While Phoung is slowly recovering, regular delivery of rice and other food will take some pressure off the boys and give them extra time to fish.

DWC's Covid-19 Emergency Response program has given hope to many vulnerable families in the developing world.

Our in-country partner, Ifejant - Organización sin fines de lucro, has updated us with their implementation of DWC’s Emergency Covid-19 Response program in Peru.
Mothers from families living in these barrios outside of Lima took charge of the registration and delivery of essential food and supplies.
Teens and children participated in the delivery, carrying heavy packages up the dusty hillside to their neighbours.
Families left unable to work and sheltering in place and were extremely grateful to receive this support.
DWC’s acknowledges the generosity of Urban Systems Foundation with this initiative.

DWC’s Covid Emergency Response program is seeing the delivery of essentials to the families and people who need it most.

On Sunday, Bridge of Life organized a rice drop for 430 families living in Outaput and Chong Prolay village in Kompong Khleang. Each family received 10 kilos of rice as well as fish sauce, and canned sardines.

We would like to send a special thank you to Developing World Connections whose financial contribution spearheaded the effort and allowed us to purchase the rice and fish sauce. We would also like to thank several Bridge of Life Urgent Appeal one-time donors who allowed us to purchase additional foodstuffs and coordinate the event and logistics. Lastly, thank you to the district chief, police, Bridge of Life staff and Community First volunteers for sharing your time.

Times continue to be difficult for residents of Kompong Khleang. In addition to Covid-19, we are contending with a drought, lower than normal fish stock, and lack of employment opportunities as borders remain closed.

The sun rises & sets on Pachumama (Mother Earth) no matter what tribe, nation or continent. Cultural exchanges are an inspirational reciprocity when we lead with our soul & spirit as well as our intellectual & physical domains! This recent trip to Peru was one of extraordinary reciprocity! Inca people have survived so much oppression over the centuries. Today there are many thrivers who discern quickly wether the 'foreigners/visitors' come with a clean respectful heart. My husband & I plan to accept invitations & return sooner than we planned pre-Peru trip. Cross-cultural communications reach into the soul & spirit fanning the flame of unconditional giving & receiving! DWC so far TOPS all the deployments I've experienced.
