Hello! As many you have heard by now, there won't be a New Years Eve bullriding in Barriere this year. I wanted to updated everyone who has been attending the event and following this FB page.
When we first started this project (way back in 2012!) it was to raise money for a bursary on behalf of my Uncle, Mike Puhallo, who had recently passed away. Over the next 5 years we raised enough for a long term bursary called the Farm Kids Fund. That bursary still continues and awards financial aid to rural youth for their post-secondary studies.
The plan was, once the bursary was sustainable to generate and award every year, to have the folks from the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo produce the event as a fundraiser for the awesome events they put on. That happened in 2016 on their own, and again in 2017 where I was able to help them out. The 2018 event I put on with our original team and hoped another group from the western and rodeo community would take it into the future.
That almost happened this year, but didn't quite make it.
So that you know where I am on this... Jenn and I moved to Edmonton this past May after I was offered a job in the new Jason Kenney administration as a Chief of Staff. Besides all things western, rodeo and ranchy, my other passion is politics. I had served as a senior political staffer when Gordon Campbell was Premier of BC way back when. This new opportunity to work with another great leader wasn't something I could pass up. We miss BC but if you've been watching the news then you've been seeing, and will continue to see, Alberta standing up for all of us Westerners. I'm proud I get to be a part of that.
Nobody thought we could make a go of putting on a professionally sanctioned bullriding with elite athletes and world class bulls in Barriere, in the middle of winter, and make it successful. It worked because of you, the fans, and our volunteers and sponsors who took a chance on us.
I'll always be thankful for that and for the crazy good times we had in starting this event and growing to the size it became, and that I hope it will be again!
So stay tuned. Any group that wants to take this event slot on for next year I'm more than happy to help and share the "how to" to put it on. That includes handing over this FB page so that everyone who has been a part of this great journey we started can stay informed on the event happening again.
Thanks again for a great ride! If you want to stay in contact, just friend me on Facebook!
All the best,
Steven L. Puhallo
PS: If you want to get into some great bullriding action, head over to Red Deer this November for the Bullriders Canada international finals. We'll see you there if you do!
